4 Important Things to Make Your B. Voc Certification Effective

B Voc courses were introduced to help students who are not academically inclined or are looking for formal certification programmes in fields such as electricians, plumbing, hairstyling, fashion, cinematography, etc. B.Voc courses in India are a result of the Skill Development India programme for which AICTE and UGc collaborations were sought. Over 200 colleges across India offer various courses in fields as diverse as engineering, journalism and hotel management. Here we look at 4 Important Things to Make Your B. Voc Certification Effective –

1.   Work on the soft skills

A big gap that is found in technical education in India is the absence of soft skills among the graduates. In an age where businesses are driven by 24/7 global communication, it is unacceptable for graduates in any stream to not have rudimentary communication skills and soft skills. Apart from interpersonal skills, any professional must be fluent in the use of computer technology so that they can cater to their customers and reach out to them in the platform they understand.

2.   Look for meaningful projects

The salient feature of B. Voc courses is the emphasis on projects and hands-on training. However, to do projects does not imply doing any project that comes one’s way. The project must be meaningful, add value to the student’s portfolio and add to their knowledge. When the student speaks of the project in his/her resume, it must reflect their capabilities and area of interest.

3.   Choose the college location wisely

Select a college that is located in a place where there are professional organisations in the area of one’s interest. So, a student pursuing Engineering fields should look at colleges where there are many companies, any student looking at hairstyling, photography or fashion studies must ideally opt for a location where there are commercial and urban centres.

4.   Keep networking

B. Voc course duration is spent mostly outside the classroom, in practical work more than theoretical studies. Hence, it is a great time to communicate with one’s peers and people from the industry and build one’s network.
